Thus,myfirstpurposewastogiveacoherentintroductiontostringtheory,basedonthePolyakovpathintegralandconformalfieldtheory.Nopreviousknowledgeofstringtheoryisassumed.Idoassumethatthereaderisfamiliarwiththecentralideasofgeneralrelativity,suchasmetricsandcurvature,andwiththeideasofquantumfieldtheorythroughnon-Abeliangaugesymmetry.Originallyafullcourseofquantumfieldtheorywasassumedasaprerequisite,butitbecameclearthatmanystudentswereeagertolearnstringtheoryassoonaspossible,andthatothershadtakencoursesonquantumfieldtheorythatdidnotemphasizethetoolsneededforstringtheory.Ihavethereforetriedtogiveaself-containedintroductiontoAsecondpurposewastoshowhowsomeofthesimplestfour-dimensionalstringtheoriesconnectwithpreviousideasforunifyingtheStandardModel,andtocollectgeneralresultsonthephysicsoffour-dimensionalstringtheoriesasderivedfromworld-sheetandspacetimesymmetries.Newdevelopmentshaveledtoathirdgoal,whichistointro-ducetherecentdiscoveriesconcerningstringduality,M-theory,D-branes,andblackholeentropy.

JosephPolchinskireceivedhisPh.D.fromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyin1980.AfterpostdoctoralfellowshipsattheStanfordLinearAcceleratorCenterandHarvard,heJoinedthefacultyattheUniversityofTexasatAustinin1984,movingtohispresentpositionofProfessorofPhysicsattheUniversityofCalifronaatSantabarbara,andPermanentMemberoftheInstituteforTheoreticalPhysics,in1992.
